How Fire Retardant Plywood Adds an Extra Layer of Protection

In addition to helping protect your family, FR plywood allows you to build a passive fire safety system into the overall construction of your home. While regular wood products are a fuel source for fires, high-quality FR plywood utilises fire retardants not only to improve resistance to combustion, but also to slow down the rate of spread of flames beyond the immediate area during fire events.

Impregnation of the Substrate

The fire protection of FR plywood is dependent on how it is made. High-Quality FR plywood has been subjected to a vacuum-pressure treatment using impregnated fire retardants before the product is made; this treatment facilitates the penetration of fire retardants into the top veneer and solid core of the substrate and subsequent manufacturing areas. Because the fire retardants are located throughout the substrate rather than only on the surface of the manufactured component, they retain their fire resistance even after the surfaces are cut, sanded or drilled during the assembly of the finished furniture component.

Alteration of the Burning Process

FR plywood alters the combustion process of materials and limits the ability of combustion to occur on surfaces through heat exposure. Therefore, exposure to extreme heat produces:

  • Delayed ignition for surfaces with fire-treated materials: With fire-treated sources, the amount of heat needed and the time it takes prior to ignition are significantly increased. Thus, you have more time to escape from the fire during its initial stages.
  • Low Flame Spread Index (FSI): Fire-retardant best plywood products have been designed to slow down the rate of spread of flames on surfaces, thereby preventing localised flashovers from kitchen fires (in the kitchen area of your home) from spreading to the rest of your home.
  • Reduced production of smoke and toxic gases: Fire-retardant plywood has one of the lowest smoke and toxic gas production rates of any wood surface material. In an actual fire emergency, people must be able to see clearly to exit their home.

Fire Resistance

High-quality FR plywood satisfies required fire safety standards while still maintaining the same functional properties as untreated, high-quality, marine-grade plywood. Therefore, when you use FR plywood in the construction of your cabinets and wardrobes, you will not have to sacrifice the structural integrity or durability of the finished furniture assembly to create enhanced levels of fire safety throughout the building.

Fire Protecting the Home

By strategically installing FR plywood in areas of your home that are at the highest risk of a fire developing (i.e. behind electrical panels, under kitchen cabinets, along common stairways, etc.), you create a fire-hardened perimeter around your home. By using certified, accredited multi-threat protective products (fire retardant and chemically treated) like those manufactured by Royale Touche, you will take advantage of having a way to provide fire protection to your family and your home for as long as you own that property. You will also create a more aesthetically pleasing, functional, and safer living environment for you and your family.
